Stop for a moment.
Life has a way of keeping us constantly busy. We become busy with work, family responsibilities, recreation, and the everyday cares of this world. Sometimes we are busy worrying about our situation, frustrated by unanswered prayers, discouraged by sickness, disappointed by life’s challenges, or overwhelmed by everything happening around us.
In the middle of all this busyness, we can become so focused on what is happening around us that we fail to notice what God is doing within us. We can become so occupied with life’s demands that we overlook His voice, His direction, and His calling.
Have you ever been so busy trying to figure everything out that you forgot to spend time in His presence?
Sometimes the greatest obstacle to being used by God is not a lack of ability—it is a lack of availability. God is not looking for people who have everything together. He is looking for hearts that are willing to say,
“Lord, here I am. Use me.”
That brings us to another young man in Scripture whose availability changed the course of history.
His name was David.
David’s heart was completely surrendered to God and was willing to be used by Him. The Bible tells us in 1 Samuel 13:14 that God sought “a man after his own heart.” God saw David’s availability, his willingness, and his readiness to obey.
David’s life was consistently tuned in to God’s will. He loved God, trusted Him, and obeyed Him. Whenever he fell short, he did not run from God—he ran to God with a repentant heart.
Are you tuned in to God’s will for your life?
Are you completely surrendered to Him with a heart that is willing to obey?
David was in God’s will, and because of that, he found himself in the right place at the right time.
Jesse, his father, sent him to bring parched corn, bread, and provisions to his brothers who were serving in Israel’s army. David obeyed his father’s request.
When David arrived at the camp, Goliath came forward once again to challenge the armies of Israel. Every soldier was filled with fear.
But David saw something different.
He saw a cause.
While everyone else saw the giant’s size, David saw the greatness of God. He could not understand why God’s people would allow fear to silence them while Goliath openly defied the armies of the living God.
David boldly asked,
“Is there not a cause?” (1 Samuel 17:29)
He was disturbed that fear had paralyzed the army of Israel. David knew the battle was bigger than himself. It was about defending the honor of God’s name.
Is there not still a cause today?
Is there not a cause to stand for Christ, even if you have to stand alone?
Following God requires both faith and courage because our confidence is not in ourselves but in the God we serve.
David also demonstrated his availability when speaking to King Saul. He was willing to go out and face Goliath because he had already seen God’s faithfulness while tending his father’s sheep.
David said,
“Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock…” (1 Samuel 17:34)
As you continue reading through verse 37, you see that David’s confidence was not in his own strength but in the Lord.
He declared,
“The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.”
David was not boasting in himself.
He was boasting in the God who had already proven Himself faithful.
Where is your faith today?
Are you trusting God to deliver you from the battles you are facing?
Are you boasting in the God whom you serve?
Are you running into the battle wearing the wrong armor?
Or are you truly available for God to use you?
The Bible tells us to put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10–18). Yet David refused Saul’s armor because he had never tested it.
“And David put them off.” (1 Samuel 17:39)
Instead, David chose what God had already placed in his hands.
He took his staff.
He chose five smooth stones from the brook.
He placed them in his shepherd’s bag.
He took his sling in his hand and drew near to the Philistine.
David understood something that many people miss.
The battle belonged to the Lord.
David declared that the Lord would deliver Goliath into his hand so that all the earth would know that there is a God in Israel.
God was not looking for the strongest soldier.
He was looking for someone available, willing, and completely surrendered to Him.
What has God placed in your hands that He is waiting to use?
Are you available?
To God be the glory for the great things He has done.
